Acceptance For The Hurting Famous 2-29-12

I recently browsed again through a thumbnail sketch of one of my favorite female singers. She has been gone for years, but each time I hear a certain song, I well up with tears. This departed saint was one of the best of the best in spite of her route to life.

Her mother at the age of twelve was raped at knife point in Chester, PA and the little girl was exposed to a life that seems surreal.

In an interview she once said, "I never felt like I belonged. I was always on the outside."

In spite of vaudeville, Broadway, films and her own television show her most famous song is the haunting, His Eye Is On The Sparrow. She was converted to Christ in a Billy Graham meeting in 1957 and at last found a hiding place, a place she could call home. I write of Ethel Waters.

Many people live their entire life feeling as an outsider, someone who no matter what they achieve they simply do not fit in. Oscar nominations, presidential awards, fame and great talent do not wipe away the deep inner scars that produce the sense of being an outcast. I am thankful that Ethel Waters discovered the truth of acceptance as expressed by Paul in Ephesians 1:6 "To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved." Christ made the difference for me, for Ethel Waters and He will make the difference for you.
