The law of God instructs believers as to their duties and responsibilities. God's character is reflected in His law and therefore it behooves all Christians to be well acquainted with it so as to know how they ought to behave. True Christianity or Biblical Christianity knows nothing of a lawlessness or antinomian spirit. This idea that because a Christian is under grace he can therefore live as he or she pleases is heresy and has no validity in the Bible.

A Christian is not under the law as a covenant of works but he is is sanctified by the law word of God."Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." John 17:17

This law continually drives him back to God and His grace or mercy to find relief from the condemnation of the law. The fact that a believer continually fails to keep the law should grieve him to the point that he cries out to God for more holiness, more grace to keep God's law which he delights in after the inner man. Romans 7:22

Psalm 51:6 "Behold thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Job 38:36 "Who hath put widom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

Psalm 1:2 "But his delight is in the law of God; and in his law doth he meditate day and night."

From these verses we can see that God is greatly interested in not just an external righteousness but an inward righteousness which extends to the spirit or heart of a person. The Pharisees during our Lord's time kept only the law in the outward part and then not perfectly. They disregarded the spirit of the law and were only interested in the letter of the law.

This the Lord Jesus Christ came to correct by saying if we lust after a woman or hate a person we are guilty of heart adultery and heart murder. These sins condemn us and we must be delivered from them by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Only through the born again experience or regeneration can a person turn from their sins and turn to Jesus Christ as their refuge. This is what it means to receive Jesus as both Lord and savior. To receive Jesus means receiving or believing on him for who he is. He is Lord and he expects all who call him Lord to depart from evil or sin. To claim to be one of his disciples and to disregard his law is the foolishness of pride and ungodliness which will end up in judgment in the last day.
Matthew 7:21-23 "Depart from me you that work iniquity or rebellion or lawlessness."



Because there is so much confusion in the local churches as to the proper relationship between the law and grace I thought it good to explain wherein the law doth consist and its purpose.

Many verses in the Bible give us assurance that the law is still valid in some sense for today. That sense must be properly understood or we run the danger of legalism or anti-nomianism, both of which are damnable heresies.

Legalism is the belief that you can be justified by keeping the law or ten commandments. Antinomianism is the belief that Christians are under grace therefore they have no relationship or obligation to study or regard the law in any way.

Now what saith the Scriptures to these ideas or beliefs?

There are two things which are indispensable to the Christian’s life: first, a clear knowledge of duty, and second, a conscientious practice of duty corresponding to his knowledge. As we can have no well-grounded hope of eternal salvation without obedience, so we can have no sure rule of obedience without knowledge. Although there may be knowledge without practice, yet there cannot possibly be practice of God’s will without knowledge. And therefore that we might be informed what we ought to do and what to avoid, it has pleased the Ruler and Judge of all the earth to prescribe for us laws for the regulating of our actions. A.W. Qustion: What is the Law of God?

A. God spake all these words, saying:

First Commandment


I am the Lord thy god, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Second Commandment


Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous god, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hath me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.


Third Commandment


Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.


Fourth Commandment


Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all they work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sab bath day, and hallowed it.


Fifth Commandment


Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.


Sixth Commandment


Thou shalt not kill.


Seventh Commandment



Thou shalt not commit adultery.


Eigth Commandment


Thou shalt not steal.


Ninth Commandment


Thou shalt not bear false witness against
thy neighbor.


Tenth Commandment


Thou shalt not covet thy neightbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

* Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfill. for I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall bfreak one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 5:17-19.

* For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doesth those things shall live by them. Rom. 10: 5

* Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: Yea, we establish the law. Rom. 3:31

* Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. Ps. 119:9





NOTE: The Ten Commandments represent the moral law of God and are binding on all Christians today, not as a means of justification but rather as a principle of life and as a means of sanctification. Those who teach Christians are not under the law in any way whatsoever are left without any standard by which to judge their thoughts, words or actions. This idea is foreign to the Holy Scriptures and is known by the term anti-nomianism. Anti=against, nomos=law
