During the years Michael Jordan ruled the NBA a saying covered the country implying that if you wore his Air Jordan shoes you could “be like Mike.” The phrase papered the country like a Mid-Winter Montana snowstorm. Yes, I tried a few pairs. But even then the average cheer leader could out jump me.

To try to be like someone else with but one exception is an exercise in futility. I know of one preacher who encouraged his followers to imitate him even in mannerisms in that a decent imitation would better than their best. Weird, but I withhold names.

Alfred Hitchcock put it well when he wrote, “If I won’t be myself, who will?” Much trouble is in the world due to many people parroting “I gotta be me” when they haven’t taken the time and necessary effort to discover, define and refine just who and what they are. Their “me” appears to be totally different each time you see them.

The Christian life is best expressed as stated in Colossians 1:27 “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” We can put on Air Jordans but we can’t get Mike in us. The things of Christ are accomplished in us through the presence of Christ in us.
