For years Dr. Tom Wallace has told the story of a boy born poor in a ghetto who made it big. Upon his demise he was buried sitting in the driver’s seat of a new Cadillac painted gold. Two boys from the same ghetto observed the scene at the gigantic grave and one said to the other, “Man, that’s what I call living.” Truth be known the corpse in the Caddy most likely had never really lived but was like the woman described in 1 Timothy 5:6 “But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.”

William Wallace the man whom the Braveheart story is based said, “Every man dies, but not every man lives.” The life portrayed in the words of song, “I’m going to live fast, love hard, die young and leave a beautiful memory” are empty when the grey hair covers your head, the arteries to your heart are plugged with the harvest of senseless indulgence and broken hearted women and children litter the path of a life lived for self.

I performed the funeral service for such a man not long ago. One of his children said, “The only good thing I remember about dad is that he got saved not long ago and he came to see me and apologized for his life away from us children. He talked to us about Jesus. I will remember that day always.” I suppose this is a short spanned but beautiful memory. Most such stories do not have even the smallest beautiful memory.
