On Being A Vessel

My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

II Corinthians 12:9 (NLT)


Jo Davis, a doctoral student majoring in physical therapy, constantly interrupted her committee chairperson and seminar lecturer during their six person seminar. Whenever Professor Constance Hoover presented a topic for discussion, Ms. Davis’ usual response was familiarity and knowledge of virtually any subject.

Following the seminar, the entire class was invited to dinner at a local restaurant. As a gracious hostess, Professor Hoover poured iced tea into her students’ glasses. When she came to Ms. Davis’ glass, Professor Hoover continued to pour tea even when the glass was full.

“That’s enough!” stated Ms. Davis. “The glass is full!”

“I recognize that Ms. Davis. This appears to be your problem. I, as your lead professor do not seem able to provide you with any new knowledge for your consideration. Until you offer me and our class an empty glass, you’ll not ever enjoy my iced tea.”

Far too many persons believe themselves faithful Christians and believers who require no additional knowledge with respect to their faith. For these, church attendance is a bore and everyone a hypocrite so they do not attend. It is only when a person comes to God as an empty vessel that He is able to pour His unconditional love into them. When this occurs, the believer will come to better learn and understand others and themselves.


Prayer: Almighty Father, help me to empty myself so as to bring my empty vessel to be filled
with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
