Why The Cross?

Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the LORD will be joyful.

Neil Franks, a new addition to the law firm, was turning to be a brilliant attorney but a sourpuss lacking interactive skills with the office staff. While reviewing a case file, a legal secretary noticed a gold cross ring with five diamonds molded within it. As she handed him a requested file, she pointed at the cross then asked, “That’s a nice looking ring. Isn’t that supposed to make you happy and full of joy? Shouldn’t that take away sadness?”

The attorney looked up at his secretary with a startled look, then down at his finger. “You’re right and you’re very observant,” he responded. “Ya know I never thought about that. I think we’re gonna be a great team!” from that point, the flow of his smile made the rest of the staff relax with confidence that they could converse with him.

This little office episode is revealing. How often are we guilty of not being Christ-like at the office, at school or at the mall? Many of us wear crosses as rings, chains, bracelets while wearing frowns, angry at someone or something and preoccupied with solvable problems, robbing it of it beauty and meaning of victory and joy.

Isn’t Christ’s victory supposed to make you joyful and put a smile on your face? That’s the meaning of the cross!

Prayer: Lord, Thank You for revealing Christianity to me. Let the happiness, cheerfulness and
joy show on my face and be a part of my every day actions.
