Joe (Red) Hayes wrote a song that hit number one in 1955 when Porter Wagoner recorded it. The story behind the song is really simple. Red said “One day my father-in-law asked me who I thought the richest man in the world was, and I mentioned some names. He said, 'You're wrong, it is the man with a satisfied mind.'"

I have lived the biblically allotted number of years and will testify to having known very few people with a satisfied mind. The Bible mentions a number of different mind sets and one of the goals of growth as a Christian is learning and applying the art of a satisfied mind as expressed by Paul to 1 Timothy 6:6 “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” I am not stretching the meaning by suggesting that contentment and satisfied are near the same.

The great Roman orator and statesmen Marcus Tullius Cicero said, “In a disordered mind, as in a disordered body, soundness of health is impossible.” The word mind is used ninety nine times in scripture and one of my favorites that helps me to stay at inner peace is Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” There’s more to this verse than space permits, but any way you look at it is going to help you to reach and maintain a satisfied mind.
