I am sharing a few more thoughts today on the importance of reading and not just reading for reading for readings sake, but with the intent of improving the whole person.

As stated last week it is imperative to read something worthwhile. I detest it when I buy a book and as I attempt to read it, I am struck with the knowledge that I wasted my money and adding to this the knowledge I am also wasting my time adds insult to injury. When I first entered the company of believers back in 1962 my pastor and several pastors since have advised me to read the autobiographies/biographies of great men and women.

Benjamin Disraeli became the Prime Minister of England in spite of prejudice against his Jewish ancestry and thus far he is the only Jew to serve as Prime Minister. Mr. Disraeli said: “Nurture your mind with great thoughts; to believe in the heroic makes heroes.” He knew the wisdom of reading about the exploits of the heroes in any field of endeavor.

In the First Century A.D. courage was a premium for the faith to grow and now reading of the men and women of that era adds to our courage, the heroic lurking beneath the surface in all people of faith. It is of interest that Paul advised Timothy to read of the heroes of earlier times. Notice 1 Timothy 4:13 “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” Paul knew that if young Timothy failed to read his ministry would be about as effective as a violin with one string. Do not fiddle your life away.
