When I was young, before salvation in Christ I recall reading the Reader’s Digest and it often ran an ad from a large corporation urging people to read. The ad implied that if you learned to read you would have a better chance in life. The ad was simple: “Send me a man who reads.” For some reason I took reading even more seriously and began reading books on many things, but mostly about people. I knew Hemingway’s people before I knew the people of God in the Bible.

An old Chinese philosopher, Confucius, said this concerning reading:

“No matter how busy you think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”

The Apostle Paul commended the young pastor Timothy for knowing the Holy Scripture from early childhood and when Paul was in Laodicea facing the onset of winter he wrote to Timothy for his help. Notice what Paul placed the greatest importance on. 2 Timothy 4:13 “The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.” Books and parchments were tremendously important with a higher need for the parchments. Paul put a higher need for his mind and heart than on warmth for his body in winter.

I would like to see a revival of any number of things, but down deep I see a need for a renewed desire to read books with good subject material and hopefully well written. We should as Paul stated elsewhere study to show approval. Do you have a reading plan for this year of our Lord 2012?
