When I was very young, which by the way was only yesterday, I learned to love to read. I recall reading about Albert Schweitzer long before I could pronounce his name. I did to some degree understand the compassion he had for hurting and trodden down people. He left a lucrative life to work among people who could never repay him in any way.
While speaking to a group of people who were "giving thought to a life of doing good" but where waiting for things to improve Dr. Schweitzer said,
"Anyone who purposes to do good must not expect people to roll stones out of his way, but must accept his lot calmly, even if they roll a few stones upon it."
Over the course of passing years since yesterday I have observed many talented people who for whatever reason settled for a comfortable life when with a little willingness to follow Schweitzer's advice would have become great. Two excerpts from different writers came to mind as I was writing the above and they hit the nail I am hammering smack dab on the head. "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference" - Robert Frost "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Ralph Waldo Emerson
In our ceaseless search for the life laidback we Christians appear to miss the point. Paul commented on the correct path for life in 2 Timothy 2:3 "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ."
