Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday 12-13-2011

Yesterday I heard my friend of many years, Al Ray, address the Wabash Valley Pastor's Prayer Breakfast Including Wives, Children and Hanger's On. Don't let the Ivy League sounding title fool you, this group has been in action since the days the Wabash River was considered the drop off point of Civilization.

Al's message was designed to comfort us from the suffering of Sunday and to encourage us to renew our strength and walk on for Jesus with our head held high knowing that we the Soldiers of Christ in this Frontier of all that’s good can and will with courage in our hearts face once again on Sunday next all the fiery darts Satan throw at us.

Pastor Ray commented on the effects of the terror we face on each Sunday and the devastating aftereffects. One of the aftereffects is known to cause dullness of mind and coldness of heart. He warned against the danger of speaking prior to thinking especially on Monday's. His advice was well timed. I had planned to give a fellow beaten down saint present at the meeting a real piece of my mind, but after hearing Al, I knew no sane person, including the fellow in question who has never known the joy of a sharp mind due to his mother having held her breath during his birth would want a piece, even a small piece of a dull mind.

Here is Al's key statement which is a quote from another who may not have been suffering from the Monday Morning Clergical Dull Mind Syndrome. A man named Stan Toler whom I do not know, but whose brother Paul, may be a close friend. Anyway Stan said,

"A dull mind and a sharp tongue are usually in the same head."

You would think that as much as I write I would have said something that good or better. After Al was finished speaking the preachers were on guard about making any sort of mistake and thus exhibiting a dull mind. We can live with cold hearts because we deal with such all the time in marriage counseling or counseling those who grieve and feel aggrieved due to a smaller amount being left in a will to them than was left to their sister.

Brother Al treated us to the dictionary definition of a dull mind using this from Webster's Unabridged: "be dull and soulless, like a beast of the field -- a brainless animal, with listless eye, unlighted by any ray of fancy, or of hope, or fear, or love, or life -- J.K.Jerome" This definition gives some idea of the thoughts the sight of our group must have thrust into this dear brother's mind. To try to fire up such a group requires the nerve of a Third World tyrant and I was shocked at how well Al performed this task. Kudos dear brother.

Concerning Pastors Paul wrote in Hebrews 13:7 "Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation." I don't think Paul ever addressed Pastors on a Monday morning.
