I remember a "Christian" book that my aunt enjoyed reading. It was called "Acts of Faith" by Iyanla Vanzant and on the surface it looked like good Christian literature. It mentioned God, faith and spirit throughout the book. But don't jugde a book by its cover.

What I quickly learned was that this book referred to God as a Mother-Child and faith was seen as some kind of self-determination rather than faith in the living God. In addition, Vanzant made no mention of Christ's death, burial and resurrection. Instead, I kept seeing New-Age terminology throughout the book. I stopped reading this after I learned the truth. Another thing I found out was that Iyanla Vanzant was a Yoruba priestess. This is an example of how some authors promote cultic teaching in Christian packages.

We should be careful about what we read. Not all religious literature is truly Christian. Some books totally deviate from the essentials of the faith. Here are some things you should look out for. If the book doesn't proclaim Christ as the only hope of eternal life and pardon of sins, a red light should come on. If it denies the Trinity and deity of Christ, don't buy the book. If it promotes self-sufficiency and focuses too much on your inner self, then the book may be New Age material.

We live in a time when the sacred is mixed with the secular. While the Bible is our only authority for God's truth, it doesn't mean we can't read Christian literature. But we should make sure that the books we read are biblically accurate.
