Modesty Is Still Relevant

If you look at the music videos and popular magazines today, you see young women who are wearing almost nothing. There is little modesty in today's society and this only contributes to the sexual immorality that is plaguing our world today.

Young women should dress in a modest way, a way that will not draw negative attention from the opposite sex. I'm not talking about dressing plainly, as it's good for women to wear nice outfits, makeup, jewelry, a decent hairstyle, etc. But extremely short dresses, shorts, and tops are not proper to wear. When young women dress immodestly, they risk unwanted situations such as a bad reputation, temptation to engage in premarital sex, and pregnancy. You may think this is old-fashioned but modesty is still important for women today.

Modesty is more than how you dress. Your attitude should be humble and your actions should reflect the fruit of the Spirit such as gentleness, patience, kindness, and others mentioned in Galatians 5. Humility is not weakness, it's an attitude of faith in Christ and not our own efforts.

We have examples in the Bible of women who expressed true modesty. Esther was a beautiful queen who helped free her people from destruction. Ruth was a Moabite who chose to follow God in an unkown land and was rewarded with a husband. Hannah was a woman of faith who prayed fervently for a child and her son, Samuel was one of the great prophets of Israel. And throughout the New Testament, you see the apostle Paul greeting a few women who helped him in the proclamation of the gospel. This is contrast to what is portrayed as femininity today.

So when you're asking yourself, "What should I wear today?", don't just think about clothes. Think about what you'll wear spiritually.
