World over this weekend, we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ a history proven event that happened over 2000years ago. Its one of my favourite days of the year though I have once wondering “Does He really have to die?” it was in the midst of my speculation I found the answer in another question; “For what purpose was He born?”. The angel that announced the birth of Jesus to his would be virgin mother accentuate that he would be coming to save from sin (Matt 1:21) and how then will sins be taken away without the shedding of blood (Heb 9:22).
He knew it, He walked in the consciousness of it and He regularly told those around Him of His coming death though some would grow cold, some would rebuke Him but no matter there responses, they knew whatever He says is imminent; because they have seen Him curse the fig tree, calm a raging sea and even walk on water and they wouldn’t doubt Him no more.
Then came the sad and black day we call the Good Friday, He was apprehended and the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate sentenced Him to death by the most brutal inhuman way of Jesus’ time; death by crucifixion. He hung on the outskirt of the city among two thieves all of this fulfilling the prophecies that has been spoken hundreds of years before Him.
He went through all of this to take away our sins. Our Sin was laid on him, He suffered and was wounded because our wrong (past, present and future) was imputed in Him and subsequently, the consequences of our sins came on Him also. The transaction was not one way it was two ways. As our wrong came on Him, His rectitude came on us; this is the miracle of His death!
This proves the Love of God to us at its highest level (Romans 5:8), for it was God Himself who put the death punishment for our sins on Christ Jesus (Isaiah 53:5-6). All of this is in an attempt to win us over to Him.
I again asked “Why?” He is God, He does not need me but yet He desperately wants me, He seems to witlessly in love with me. Why? Then I found out, that is just Him. That is who He is- Love; unconditional, relentless and undying!
What kind of love will put itself in harm’s way? He didn’t just take away my sins, but He also took away all it consequences too. Things like sickness, poverty, curses and so on all that came as a result of Sin. He was not cajoled into doing this, He of your own free will lovingly gave himself up (John 10:17-18) for all.
As much as he knew He would die, He also knew He would not remain there. He often said He would come back from the dead and He did. God raised Him from the dead (Acts 3:15) proving that of a truth He is the Son of God (Romans 1:4). Before He ascended into Heavens, He showed himself to His friends dealing the final to all the doubt that remains in them in awe one of them confessed “My Lord and My God”.
Because of this have we now become the sons of God (as long as we believe in Jesus and accept what he did for us by his death) bought adopted and purchase by the loving sacrifice God made. It is beyond us, the love is fierce, unrelenting, and enormous as a vast shoreless ocean. I wouldn’t for more; I can not resist this, it has taken all of me. The cross of Christ is the perfect symbol of Love; on it is nailed all accusations, guilty, sickness, curse and all that is not found in the righteousness of God. This love gives me the very nature of God and Life eternal in quality and quantity.
