Thomas Merton is quoted as having said, "Do not be too quick to condemn the man who no longer believes in God, for it is perhaps your own coldness and avarice and mediocrity and materialism and selfishness that have chilled his faith."

The Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote:
"Oh wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see ourselves as ithers see us.
It would from many a blunder free us--
And foolish notion."

Could this be one of the reasons it is difficult for us to win souls for Christ? That we are not living our faith? True, nobody's perfect. The best among us are flawed, mistake-prone, erring human beings. But careful observation, in most cases, will reveal those who are trying their level best to be examples of Christian living. Christ says of the Pharisees, "They say, and do not." (Matt. 23:3) Good, sound teaching, but lives that do not illustrate it? Tinkling cymbal and sounding brass? It may be a good investment of our time to take a critical look at how we live our lives when we are not necessarily trying to share the Good News. Because the world is watching us all the time and will draw its conclusions from our day in and day out behavior, not just from our profession of faith.

Let's try to remember who we are and Whose we are all the time. From that the world will rightly judge the validity of our words and hopefully be drawn to the Savior we worship.
