My MOTHER’S SONGS

I remember my mother sitting in her rocking chair
back when she was young and beautiful, to me.
With slender, delicate hands, she’d pick up her hymnal,
weathered with age and falling apart,
yet held together by love.
Her voice rang out loud and strong
as she’d sing those timeless melodies
while my sister and I sat at her feet.
Rock of Ages Cleft For Me
and Onward Christian Soldiers,
Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus
and Love Lifted Me
These were my mother’s songs
But I do believe that her most favorite of all
was the Old Rugged Cross.
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
I can still hear her sing
With all her heart and all her soul
my mother’s voice filled the room to the delight of two little girls.
And now that I’m like the woman my mother was
Seated in my rocking chair,
the songs she sang to me are now
the songs I sing to my children and grandchildren
