God Glasses

But Jesus called the children to him and said,” Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
(Luke 18-16 NIV 1984)

When you look at the homeless, what do you see? When you see people carrying signs asking for food or money, what do you see? What do you see when you see drug addicts, prostitutes, the disheveled and the mentally ill? Have you ever looked down on anyone or not wanted them near you? Many people don’t. A friend of mine sends his children to Catholic school; they attend Church and are brought up in a Godly manner. The night before this writing there was a city counsel meeting in which many did not want a place in their city where the homeless would congregate at certain times, eat meals and clean up. My friend told me his eight year old son was there, and actually got up to speak. He told the Mayor and counsel that he had a prepared speech, but was to nervous to read it. What he did say was, “You are being unfair, these people are just looking for a good meal, how would you feel if you had no where to live and nothing to eat?”

No wonder Jesus called for the children. Their hearts are so pure, they look through God glasses. The children see the obvious, they see the need and they share the love. On another occasion this same friend and his young boys went for ice cream. The boys saw a man carrying a sign that said, “Need Money for Food”. The boys said to their dad, “we need to give him money for food”. My friend said, “All I have is the ice cream money”. All three boys immediately said, “We don’t need the ice cream, give him the money for food”. Wow, you better believe the man ate that night, and the boys had their ice cream, after that much unselfish love was demonstrated.

God sees right through the facades and behavior of people. He sees the need, He sees the pain and He sees the need for love. God sees that people have gotten themselves into situations they have no way out. God wants to help, sometimes he waits for folks to ask and sometimes he just helps. Sometimes people miss His help all together. The boys I mentioned wear God glasses and see the hearts of people. These children don’t call people, homeless, drug addicts, mentally ill, or beggars. These children like God call them people. Like God, children see inside of these folks and see the people, they see their hearts and they see the people God created.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I need to borrow these boys, God glasses.
