Psalm 119.73

A reason for existence

"Your hands made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments" [Psalm 119.73 NASB]

We have all at one time or another gasped at the amazing wonders of creation. As a shepherd boy from his youth, David was no different. However, David also stood in awe of how God repeatedly and specifically made him aware of both the physical and spiritual realms.

Just as God had gathered up the dust and made Adam, so He had been at work producing David. In the beginning He had prepared and equipped His servant and then He had taken a step back and observed His creation.

The upbringing of most any of us was interspersed with both favourable and unfavourable experiences; and yet here we are, God conscious and spiritually sensitive to the needs of others.

There are people today who admire the creation but they have no room in their lives for the One who made it [Romans 1:25]. However, to David there was a reason for his existence. Therefore he asked God for understanding so that he could learn His commandments. Just as there was an order and design in the natural creation, David asked for a similar pattern for his spiritual life.

Do you ever feel that you have yet to discover the precise reason for your existence? There may have been unmistakable indications of God's existence and activity on your behalf and yet in your inner man there is a yearning for a more intimate relationship with Him.

God had given Daniel insight to understand the future and to David He had given discernment, which enabled him to compose songs and arrange a pattern of worship for the Temple choir.

God, being unlimited in every field, also has wonderful plans for you. You may have asked, "What do I need to do?" David was prepared to be obedient once he knew what to do. Are you? [David McArdle]
