Cassie’s Gift (our 1 year old Belgian Malinois)

Cassie took her nightly run to do what dogs must do.
Being dark, I did not see, as by my feet she flew.
When from the den a shriek rang out. My wife was full of terror.
Had I let in an unknown guest? Perhaps it was a bear.

The shrieks kept coming long and loud from one most terrified.
I went as fast as I could go and hoped she hadn’t died.
As I came into the room there sat our K-9 clown.
She had found mom’s licorice and was woofing it right down.

‘Twas not the loss of licorice that took out all mom’s curl.
Upon her new red leather couch, lay a smelly, wet, dead squirrel.
Mom’s not know for moving fast but this time was no slouch.
The licorice fell from her lap when jumping off the couch.

Cassie left the squirrel behind in favor of the sweets.
Licorice has now become one of her favorite treats.
Now it was time for me to come as hero of the week.
I picked the squirrel up by its tail and threw it in the creek.

The moral of this squirrel’s tale; when letting the dog in.
Turn on the light and look real close at what’s beneath its chin.
It may cost you lots of cash. But it’s worth it I would say.
To pay the price of her hair dye to cover the new gray
