“Children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.” In the journey towards our destiny children are the greatest gift of God. Parents have a great responsibility to grow them up in the fear of God and wisdom. In the modern consumer life, it is still more difficult to bring up the child in discipline. It has to be carried out strictly at the same time sweetly.

Three stages of childhood

The child passes through three stages as it grows: infancy, childhood and adolescence. At each stage we have to adapt methods, anticipating changes in our children.

Infancy and the mother

Stage one is the fist few years of infancy. During this period, the mother sends strong signals of love to the baby when she presses her infant to herself, when she ensures face to face contact with the baby, when she speaks to her child in a positive way and when she promptly responds to the needs of the child. These actions make a strong bond between the child and the mother.

Formative period of childhood

The second stage is the formative period of childhood when children look to the parents for every need. Time spent with them is the greatest gift they a parent can give the child. When the parents give their time to their child they give actually a part of themselves to their child. Instructions given to them during this period have a great impact because most of the children at this stage believe that parents can do little or no wrong. This is the proper period for shaping a child. Therefore it is very important that we shape our inputs to suit each child because each child is different and unique.

Christian parenting

The Holy Bible instructs in so many places how to foster up our children. “Be strict with your child and persevere in this, so as not to suffer because of his misconduct.”(Sirach 30: 13) That does not mean abusing the child. But affection and love can do more wonders than the rod. Exemplary life and instructions play vital role in Christian
parenting.

Sweeter and stricter

Disciplining the child is a risky task. The child sometimes may reject the person administering discipline. If we do not discipline the children, it will end up as the greatest punishment to their life. Punishment is what we do TO the child and discipline is what we do FOR the child. Hence we have to discipline the child carefully and strictly. Our LOVE, and NOT ANGER, should make the difference in the child’s life.

Children are entrusted to us

God has entrusted HIS children to us. We are also His children. Let us grow them in love, in the love of God. (Please read Hebrews 12: 5-7)
