The necessity of the word

“This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your word has revived me” [Psalm 119.50 NASB]

In this verse, David continues in a similar theme from [119.49], by repeating and emphasising, the timeless and priceless benefits of God’s word. There are two truths in particular which David mentions - that God gives comfort in times of affliction and promises life-giving strength in very difficult and dangerous situations.

God had permitted trouble to enter into David’s life and arising out of His all-wise providential decision, David’s response and attitude had been unacceptable, therefore, a season of affliction followed [Heb. 12.7-11]. After this time of affliction, David may have felt apathetic and on the verge of agreeing to settle for less than God’s best. However, regardless of what has happened or how you feel, God is on your case. He is able, as Abraham and multitudes will agree, to quicken your spirit man and re-ignite you with His undying zeal.

I have often found that what God gives me is also applicable and helpful to other people. Why is this? Very often, we are all involved in similar conflicts, and face a common enemy who is using exactly the same, previously defeated, tactics against us. Such is the intense hostility that we often face, that, we sometimes think, that this war is our last one. It is at this time that we need to hear and receive by faith, the word of wisdom and strength, which the Lord freely gives.

God gives strength to His people. This is why we need to continue to fight the good fight of faith. The comfort and the strength, which we receive is not only for us, but it is also for the people who will hear our good report and be encouraged, to go on with God, into greater and greater works.
