Encountering arrogance

“The arrogant utterly deride me, yet I do not turn aside from Your law” [Psalm 119.51 NASB]

When we read, stand on, and openly confess God's word as the only solution to our problems, we often find that we immediately encounter hostile opposition.

Why does this occur? Just as God always encourages us to read and remember the word, so the enemy, as the parable of the sower informs us, tries his level best to steal the word from us.

In every church age, there are some enemies the believer will always encounter, and one of these is "the arrogant" man. Have you met this individual? His primary task, from the platform of self-centeredness, is to taunt you and try and turn you away from the revealed word. You will find, as David did, that this confrontation is continuous; therefore, set your mind and your will for a prolonged conflict.

How did David defeat this man? In Psalm 73, David saw this man, wherever he turned and although continually shaken and repulsed by his obnoxious attitude, he composed himself spiritually, returned to the word and came through victorious.

David knew, as Paul also informed the Corinthians, the avenues, which the enemy would use to come against him. Do you know your weak points? How can we continually meet and defeat the enemy who, after so many battles, still hinders and ensnares us?

We need to hide the word in our heart. Which word? ...the word of perseverance, which brings hope and comfort in affliction and which will bring you straight through into the place of victory, where the arrogant and all your other enemies are not permitted to stand. [David McArdle]
