The word of hope
“Remember the word to Your servant, in which You have made me hope” [Psalm 119.49 NASB]
In this world, in which we live, genuine and long-lasting hope is a rare and very often, a forlorn commodity. For the unsaved man, hope, very often, equals fate, with a dose of luck thrown in. There is nothing tangible and certain in his life, except death and the judgement to come.
However, for the redeemed man, it is an entirely different story and a very contrasting conclusion. God has spoken, and as many of us can testify, the word which He has uttered through the life-giving Spirit has given us hope, strength and encouragement even during seasons of affliction and times of adversity.
As so often happens, God ministers to us a word in season, even though we are living in a different time and place. This is why it is essential to recall, when required, the many promises that the Lord has proclaimed in His word. In fact, we would not be far wrong if we took His promises and wove them into our prayers.
There may have been two thoughts paramount in David’s mind at this time that God would bless and remember his family and more importantly, God would continue to use him to extend His kingdom.
If we want God to fulfil His promises, we need to ensure that we keep what we have both promised and vowed to God. Have you any unfulfilled vows in your life?
One of the strongest allies the child of God has is the Lord's perfect foreknowledge. God knows every evil plan and device of the enemy even before it is fashioned, and He imparts to His people the weapons and ammunition they need before the battle commences. Because we are continually under God's control and instruction, we will be fully equipped at all times.
At this time, one of the most effective weapons in our armoury is hope, especially during times of trouble. The Lord has thoroughly and effectively defeated Satan. His contemporaries now refer to him as, “Mr without hope.”
Therefore he sets out to deliberately attack our hope and confidence, which are two indications of his imminent and certain downfall. This is why the author of the letter to the Hebrews, said, with the voice of experience, “Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense.” [Heb. 10.35]
Do you, at this time, trust wholeheartedly in the rhema word of God? Another one of our valuable spiritual allies is God's memory! Apart from our sins, He cannot forget anything.
Therefore, rather than waver at the first indication of trouble as in the case of Paul ["fighting's within and without", 2 Cor. 7:5], instead, place your mind and will on God's infallible word to you and rest in His arms. [David McArdle]
