Is this your desire?

"Give me insight to observe your teaching, to keep it with all my heart." [Psalm 119.34]

David's spiritual character was formed, moulded and manufactured - through many trials, tests, and tribulations - into a man of discernment.

At this time in his life, David prayed, "Give me insight." There were at least two reasons for David's urgent request; he wanted his heart to be the receptacle of God's word and at the same time he wanted to walk godly and upright in the midst of his ungodly and critical contemporaries.

Over and over again the Lord asked His disciples, "Do you not yet understand?" David sought God here for understanding, discernment and the need to spiritually perceive the difference between the natural man and the spiritual man.

If we were to lay weight by the amount of Scriptural references on what is important to God and urgent for the church, this teaching would be very near the top.

David knew, as the Lord taught His disciples and the religious leaders of His day, that it is the inward reasons and motivations for our actions that are vitally important. There are some lessons which the church in every age needs to both learn and re-learn.

One of these is that what God sees and what men look at has, very often, two very different conclusions. How we desperately need the two very valuable spiritual weapons of insight and discernment to quickly correct anything in our lives that is still displeasing to Him. [David McArdle]
