“Lord, teach me the way of your laws; I shall observe them with care.” [Psalm 119.33]

If there is one thing we can certainly say about David’s life and behaviour, it is that in spiritual matters he was consistently honest. Here, once again, he knows that he needs to be taught how to live and walk in God’s laws. God spent a long time in some of the New Testament letters reinforcing this principle. It is worth remembering that the Word became flesh. Therefore, God wants us to be both honest and transparent.

This is our first step in spiritual development. Regardless of his varied experiences, David was still teachable and he wanted God to point out to him the way that he should walk and if in the process he either does wrong or - as so often happens - has un-confessed sins not covered over by God, he longed for God to show him where he had failed, and this time to direct him in a different and fruitful path. This may be particularly applicable to some of us.

The righteous may fall seven times but he will always rise again. Satan only fell once and he is still falling with no prospect of ever rising again. Every time we rise and move forward we are getting further and further away from where the enemy is.

There are only two ways to live, as the Lord highlighted in the Sermon on the Mount. David was also aware of this truth, and like most of us he desired to live a godly life and produce, as Malachi foretold, godly seed [Mal. 2:15]. The truth that we can affect for good or evil those yet to be born, may need to be stressed in some of our small groups and large churches. The impartation of God's light, knowledge and understanding automatically implies accountability and responsibility.

In this context, David knew that if he was going to continue to progress in the things of the Lord he had to, day-by-day, continue to be diligent and, like Samuel, prove to be faithful in keeping and obeying the ever fresh and relevant word of the Lord. [David McArdle]
