Yup, it’s caked on there. The splotch resembled the continent of Australia. Milk, or was it juice; No, it was milk. The crusty texture gave it away. The Icelandic looking mark on the other cushion had the slightly darker look, characteristic of Apple-Kiwi.

I unzip the coverings one by one. The kids find the foamy organs of the couch cushions fascinating. Soon small pieces of torn off padding litter the carpet. I attempt to shoo them off, which only works as long as I continue shooing. After stacking the foam squares on top of a table, I gather the stained fabric and head to the laundry room.

A couple hours later, the couch and love seat have a nice clean look to them. The micro-fiber has lived up to its boasting. A couple minutes later a spattering of grape concentrate creates a new piece of art. Van Gough? Maybe Andy Worhal…

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. (8:18-21)

If you consider the couch a bit like the world, then I think this may apply. God created the world and everything in and on it, including us. Creation has been frustrated by the fall (Adam and Eve). There is this constant battle of repair and destruction going on as we all wait for the liberation; not from the creation itself, but from the decay that was brought into it.

I took the coverings off the couch and washed them. They were clean for a short time. We can repair things to some degree with the help of the Holy Spirit. Yet, the frustration remains. We are still waiting for things to be made right permanently.

I will not allow our house to remain in a state of disrepair. I clean it up as best as I can even when my children follow me around with such disregard. In a similar way, we are to repair this world as best we can until God finishes his plan. Most people may treat the world, and people as a perishable items, but we are called to repair and build for our Lords return and completion of what he began.
