“But I want it right now,” was her whiny request.
A pink bike; complete with peddling bunny, sat on the counter. The candy filled egg had been glued back onto the back of the toy and was slowly drying. It had fallen off the table and the payload of treats had broken loose.
“I know,” I reply. “Sometimes we want things right now, but we have to wait.”
“But I’ve been waiting too long for it,” Emi continues.
I look down the hall and see my son escaping. His little hand reached up and twisted the door handle. Wiggle, wiggle, click; the door swung open as he gave it a little push.
“Hey,” I shout, “out of there!”
“But I really want it,” she says with no regard to whether I’m listening.
As I kick toys on my way to retrieve the little guy, I reply, “You will have to wait, sometimes Mommy and Daddy have to wait for things too. We don’t like it either.”
This does not register on her face. My “Deep” lesson went flying by like highway traffic on Friday.
“Noooooo,” Jayce screeches as I drag him from our bedroom for the third time. “Rock!” He complains, referring to the glider chair in the corner.
“If you come in here again, you will be in big trouble!” I warn.
“Ok, ok, saaarry, saarry.”
A few minutes later I chase him around the couch with a wet rag saying, “Hands…hands.” The peanut butter covering his stubby little fingers is seeking an object to be smeared upon.
He laughs with little thought of what happens when he gets caught.
My daughter sits at the table, “I’m all done. I don’t want any more.” One bite is missing from her breakfast.
I wonder many a time how I get anything accomplished. Then again, I guess I am the accomplishment of my parents.

For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph 2:10)
I can’t imagine looking after billions of living creatures and patiently bearing with all the “I don’t want to” and “But, but.” Yet God is the perfect parent. He teaches, guides, disciplines, and encourages with perfection.
We all get the chance to become amazing masterpieces by his hand. I know I fight it much of the time, but I sure am grateful when I do “get it.” It spurs me on to do more in the building of His Kingdom.
In Christ,
TD
