An Old Soldier
Ephesians 6:10-18

“At 73, I’m beginning to feel like ‘an old soldier’. This has become a favorite scripture to me. Putting on the whole armor of God gives me strength and courage to stand firm.”

Do you ever feel inadequate for the task? God provides us with all we need to stand and defend our faith. The Belt of Truth is not a principle to me…He is a Person. The Breastplate of Righteousness is provided when we repent of our sin. Jesus is our Righteousness and Truth.

Then Paul the Apostle writes, “Put on the shoes of the Preparation of the Gospel of Peace. Proper shoes for any job are important. A good soldier must have his boots on if he is to march. We must spend time in preparation to know the Word if we are to spread it.

A good soldier will never go out without his shield. Ours is the Shield of Faith. Without it we are completely vulnerable to the enemy, Satan. Note that his darts are fiery…meant to burn us out

Battle requires a helmet. When in battle, the helmet stays on the head for protection. Ours is the Helmet of Salvation. Without it we are not soldiers…we are impostors. We need to be able to say, “I know that I know that I know”. I am saved! Praise the Lord.

No soldier is caught without a weapon. We have the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. It is interesting to note here that a good soldier learns to use his weapon; he learns to take it apart, clean it and put it back together again. Then he must depend on it when it comes time to use it. Surely he will not be careless with it for his life may depend on it. The Word is our Manual for living. Search it like your life depends on it…it does!

Please note here; no weapons are provided for the rear…only for the front. That means there should be no retreating!

"Father, help me to be a good soldier today and defend the faith where ever you place me. Amen"
