What Is That I Smell?
II Corinthians 2:14-16
`

When I was a young girl in high school, I used to “get hand-me-down” clothes from my aunt. She was a beautiful lady and somehow I thought by wearing her clothes I too could become as sophisticated as she. I shall never forget the odor of her clothing. They always smelled like she did…a lovely lingering odor of expensive perfume. Somehow, as I read this scripture my mind travels back to that time and that sweet aroma. Whenever I wore that clothing I smelled just like my aunt…and I liked that. You may not consider that a very appropriate comparison to this scripture; but for me it is pertinent.

No matter where we go; no matter what we do we should carry the sweet aroma of Him. Not only should it permeate the places we go, but it should rise as sweet-smelling incense back to the Father.

Every place we go the fragrance of Christ should be evident to everyone…saved and unsaved. I have some allergies to some fragrances of perfumes and flowers. There have been times I have had to move away from some people as their perfumes or after shaves, made me sneeze or gave me a headache. This makes me think of verse 16 when Paul speaks of the aroma being a reminder of death to those who are perishing. There’s nothing wrong with the aroma; just a problem with the spiritual “sinuses”.

Recently I left a pot of beans on the stove, left home to go to the store and nearly burned up my kitchen. The stench was awful! I opened the doors, lit candles, sprayed Febreze; still the stench was there for several days. Only Jesus Christ can overcome any “stench” in our lives” and replace it with the sweet aroma of His Knowledge.

“Father, I pray today that the aroma of my life is a sweet smelling fragrance enjoyed and acceptable to you. If it is, it is all because of your Son, Jesus. Amen”
