For some reason, there is much confusion as to how long the flood lasted in Noah’s day. While there are many mysteries presented within the Flood Story, this need not be one of them. One will find people who claim it lasted up to 371 days! The Bible makes it clear that the earth was dried one solar year after the beginning of the flood. The student of the Bible only needs two Biblical verses and a working knowledge of the length of a lunar and solar year in order to make this determination.

Before looking at the two Biblical verses in question, we will briefly discuss a lunar year versus a solar year. So as not to get “bogged down” in particulars, we will only use round figures. A lunar year is 354 days in length and composed of alternating months of 29 or 30 days. A solar year is self-explanatory, but is 365 days in length. Now that we have covered the very basics of lunar versus solar year length, we will look at the two verses in the Book of Genesis that provide the Biblical student with the necessary chronological markers necessary to determine the length of the flood caused by the former rain. They follow.


Genesis 7:11 (KJV)

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Genesis 8:14 (KJV)

14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.


From the verses above and a working knowledge of the length of a lunar year, we can state with confidence that the seventeenth day of the second month one year later would have been on the 355th day since the beginning chronological marker indicated in Genesis 7:11. However, as indicated in Genesis 8:14, the earth was dried on the twenty-seventh day of the second month one year after the beginning of the flood. Hence, one need only add 10 days to the 355th day in order to derive one full solar year in length. The earth was dried one solar year after the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were opened.

While it is not within the scope of this writing to enter into a more in-depth study of the Flood Story, it is worth mention that there are many mysteries embedded within, the discovery of which, would be well worth the efforts of the Biblical student to explore. A spiritual understanding of the Flood Story will lead to a wealth of untold riches and enable the student to more firmly grasp what Yeshua meant when he said that the coming of the Son of Man would be as in the days of Noah.
