IN LOVE WITH A CARPENTER - AN ODE BY FELIX OBI
INTRODUCTION:
Love is a theme that rings a note in my heart and it’s about the most
sweetest of words in all of man’s vocabulary.
And to fall in Love is an experience that many can’t explain with words
for it’s a sublime feeling that is best experienced than understood.
I have had flashes of the emotions of “falling in Love”, but none can
compare to the one I have for “This Carpenter of my Dreams”. It’s love
that benumbs my perceptive faculties and defies every descriptive
ability of mine. But in the verse below, I’ve couched in narrative
format, on ode to the one I love... And as the whole world celebrates
Easter, I really wanna ask,
“WHO DO YOU LOVE?”

AN ODE TO THE ONE I LOVE
Traced To humble beginnings in Judea
A companion of flocks in a manger
Nestling on a cradle strewn of grass and hay
There he snuggled and gave the first cry
Within the arms of a gentle, loving mother

In a strange land, a hostile neighbourhood, he was housed
But amidst this dark world of sin, his purity
Shone with indescribable brightness as of the sun
The flock looked on in awe...
As the angels sang the shepherds danced
“The king is born ! The saviour’s come!!”

Kings and nobles heralded His coming
They searched and grouped for his star
Even the blood of innocent children welcomed him
And their shrieks accompanied him to Egypt
A Royal Refuge saddled on a donkey back
Wondering why so much bloodshed visited the land
Whose Lord of peace had come to save

Weaned in the obscurity of a Nazarene countryside
He learned the secrets of life and godliness
Felt the pinch of poverty, want and hunger
Yea! A carpenter who chiselled wood for his daily bread
But consumed by a desire to liberate the suffering poor folks

He emerged with the world - vision of triumph
But many considered him an enigma
For he spoke words weaved in mystery
A knowledge not discerned with mortal hearts
An understanding too lofty to be grapsed
They marvelled at the wisdom of this Carpenter

As he walked, dusts fluttered around his feet
The Galileans shared and pressed to touch him
Virtue flowed out to heal many
Ant love gushed out of his heart like a rivulet
To soothe many a despairing heart
Truly, Father has answered the prophecies of old!

But the ovation itched some ears, not a few hearts
For he upturned the status quo for good
They lynched, clobbered, pummelled and crowned him with thorns
On a rugged - barked tree, they outstretched him
Hitting jagged and rusty nails thro’ his frail body
He bled. He thirsted. He gasped. He was hurt by sin.
He died...!

Yet he saw the bright light of eternal life
He broke the shackles of sin and death
Liberating sinners to sainthood and sonship
And crowned multitudes as joint-heirs to God’s throne
But why should the world not cherish him?
Should the world loathe this messiah to its peril?
But he’s the one I love, so cherished as ever
Jesus Christ, my Lord. He’s Yeshua Hamashea!!
