Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday November 3, 2009

Joyce, the wife of my youth known internationally as "The Great Blonde" spent many years feeling as though she had nothing to offer the Lord. She served with gusto, prayed and really loved Jesus, but was always fighting that inner nagging thought that the Lord put little value on what limited ability she had to offer. As her husband I was kind of thankful for this attitude as I did not want her to get the bighead.

One day while listening to Dr. Charles Stanley the truth dawned on her and she had what is called in more formal circles an epiphany, meaning the light of truth broke through. My joy ride was over and the precious girl has been off and running for Christ with true joy in her heart ever since.

I have trouble liking people who are better communicators than me, thus I detest Charles Stanley.

The premise he used was the simple account of some of the things of seeming little value that God used in scripture. Bethlehem was a small place, a little boys lunch was of minuscule value, as was the widows mite. Since that sermon long ago when Charles was yet an Amway distributor my little wife has lived the lit up life. Praise the Lord; I guess.

Franciois Fenelon when addressing the greatness in little things wrote:

"The smallest things become great when God requires them of us; they are small only in themselves; they are great when they are done for God, and when they serve to unite us with Him eternally."

You have probably assumed that I do not care all that much for Franciois, but I must agree with his statement. We often use a song in our church and in different meetings titled, "Little is much when God is in it." This is true because none of us are really all that much when truthfully viewed through the prism of scripture, yet the Lord uses the little we offer, including ourselves to do great and mighty things.

The smallest, the most insignificant thing or person when placed into the hand of God has been used to work mighty things. When we learn to say, "Here Lord, you can have this/me for thy purpose" great happenings are on the way.
