Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday November 4, 2009

When I awoke this morning at around 3:10, a thought I have used, attempted to practice and commented on often was at the fore of my mind and as I couldn't get away from it, I got up and started writing in the hopes of spurring some struggling soul such as you, (We are all poor struggling souls) on to what the Lord has for you.

I first read today's quote at least 40 years ago in a little magazine called "Success Unlimited." As the statement is attributed to Jonathan Edwards, yes THE Reverend Doctor Jonathan Edwards of “Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God” fame, I feel reasonably safe to use the statement. I am not repeating the sermon or any part of it else I would urge you don your asbestos suit.

As I recall the good Doctor Edwards was the first President of Princeton University and a man of unusual intellect and burning faith.

His statement is more needed today than when he uttered it and I hope you can lay hold on its importance:

"The ideas and images in men's minds are the invisible forces which control them."

Re-read the statement and think about it for a while. I recommend that you memorize it and for several weeks ask how this statement applies to your life. I am willing to bet that if you are wallowing around in life and feeling as though you are stuck in quicksand, you have the wrongs ideas and images or pictures in your mind.

Solomon wrote in Proverbs 23:6-7:

"Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee."

Solomon is warning that the folks we choose to associate with have a positive or negative effect on our life, thus choosing friends who understand the value of a pure mind is essential in living a quality Christ honoring life.

Your thoughts, ideas and the images in your mind matter. And you are controlled by them. Now you know.
