Larry Lilly's Letter Monday November 2, 2009
General Omar Bradley who succeeded General Dwight Eisenhower was known to be a patient and consistent leader who grasped the unique features of his time. In the early fifties he made a statement that summed up the accomplishments of his time while pointing out the horrible lack of deeper accomplishments when he said:
"We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing that we know about living."
The more times change the more they remain the same. General Bradley's predecessor Douglas MacArthur stated on the deck of the battleship Missouri during the signing of the Japanese surrender documents that the solution to war was to be found in the spiritual realm and he was right. Most of the world's problems are a result of spiritual infancy and the infantile dependence on material solutions.
The concepts of ethics is taught in many situations including kindergarten, elementary school and higher education along with corporations and the military. Webster has a long definition but this will convey the overall meaning: "the principles of conduct governing an individual or a profession."
The problem with "ethics" is for the most part that they are spiritual in nature and therefore beyond humans to truly understand or live by them. The commandment of Jesus to love our neighbor is great, but it requires the possession and practice of the kind of love that controlled His responses during His earthly demonstration of how to live effectively.
The beauty of the Christian Life is as Paul writes in Colossians 1:27 "To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:" That Paul meant Christ in you is the powerful occupation of you by the spirit is asserted in Romans 8:11 "But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."
That most people are unaware of this powerful truth is obvious thus showing the profound nature of General Omar Bradley's statement.
