Therefore do not worry about tomorrow…

Matthew 6:34

Not being a Biblical scholar, I can readily understand when people fund many puzzling verses. I have similar problems on occasions. One phrase that always made me think was Christ’s “Sermon on the Mount” where He tells His followers, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things”.

Like that squirrel that decided to make a home in our attic and would not leave, that verse would not leave my mind. I did not question the point Christ was making—to trust God with our future needs. My mother always taught me that it is wise to pray as though everything depended upon God. So I did. But I was still confused by this verse.

For whatever reason, I came to pick up the Bible and without any forethought or intent there was Matthew 6:34! I read this verse, I think, five or six times. The readings made a difference. I got it! Plan for tomorrow but do not forget the focus should be on God who really does care about my salvation and life.

All of this came to mind because of a pamphlet I read at the “Agape Pet Clinic” in Bethany, Oklahoma followed by an hour long exchange with Dr. Larry Murphy, D.V.M., a Christian veterinarian, who challenged my thought processes for dealing with thought provoking or stressful situations present or future: “Rule # 1: Don’t sweat the small stuff! Rule # 2: It’s all small stuff!” So, thanks, Dr. Murphy!!!!

Prayer: Lord, help me put life and living in Your perspective so that I don’t miss Your
point.
