Verbal Valentine

Stephen A. Peterson

I will love you, O Lord, my strength.

Psalm 18: 1

While walking through the Shawnee, Oklahoma Wal-Mart Department store on a warmer than usual January 27, 2004 in pursuit of toothpaste, mouthwash and bleach, I found myself having to pass through a bevy of valentines suspended by what appeared to be fishing line. Red hearts, pink hearts, hearts with words of endearment and hearts expressing a hope that its giver will express some form of love by the one who is to receive the valentine. The display looked so pretty that several passing children could not help mentioning them to the adult passing through this area with them.

One little girl commented, “Daddy if I had a little money, I’d get this valentine for you daddy. I love you daddy!”

What a beautiful thought and expression of love of a daughter for her father! Until that January day, I never seen or met this little girl and her father. However, it is my belief their relationship is special. A relationship developed by the willingness of both to verbally express their love to each other.

I will have to confess that I have seldom thought to tell God that I love Him. Do you suppose He longs to be loved as we do?

Since observing that little girl express her love for her father, I have begun concluding my morning and evening prayers with a verbal valentine to my Heavenly Father with a simple, “I love YOU, Father” to the One Who unconditionally loves me most of all!

Have you told Him lately that you love Him?

Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, I love YOU very much! Amen.
