Childhood Love

“Give and it will be given to you in good measure…

Luke 6:38


For many years, I have been a collector, for one of the fears I have is that I will throw away something valuable. What am I going to do with a 1973 Oklahoma City Philharmonic Program; postcards from Japan and Korea, coins and paper money from the Philippines and British ruled Hong Kong? I do not know but I keep them. Foremost I collect books much to the chagrin of Maura who has ordered me to throw them out. I also collect words of wisdom that I have read, heard and seen on the boxes of Celestia tea. They have been collected in four ledger books. During quiet periods, I often take one of the books off the computer desk and take a look at my collection. This day I leafed through to find the following saying:

Love is something when given away will
Make the giver richer indeed!
Like gold hold it in your heart and
You won’t have any!
But give it away, spend it or share it
With family, friends,and strangers
And you will have so much it will
Flow from the biggest of houses!

This short piece of wisdom came from the then 7 year old sister of Boy Scouts, Jon and Shaun Whiteside, Carol Whiteside, when our Boy Scout Troop camped out on the family’s property for our week long troop summer camp. She claimed she learned this from her parents and watching children’s television.

If you collect meaningful sayings, perhaps you would like to save this one! For you will never know if you will run into someone who does not know love is like gold…something you can give away and still have much, much more!


Prayer: Remind us each day, O Lord, that what those who do not know You hold onto, Christians give away freely and unconditionally!
