Hitting and Missing
We love God one minute and the next moment he is forgotten about. Things get old with God too and it comes a time to stop the foolishness. I Kings 1:1-4, we know the story of King David and how that all his doings did not please God. Here he is an old man now stricken in years. David could not get warmed with the heat from the coverings they covered him with. No doubt David was near death but his men still sought to please him in his ungodly nature. They sought, searched for, made every attempt possible, and even resorted to a young virgin to heat the king. They looked for what used to heat the king but things like people do get old. It comes a time in every man’s life to stop the foolishness.
David was a skilled musician, a conqueror, a mighty man of valor, a man after God’s heart, chosen, anointed, and appointed a king. When he stopped his foolishness he was old. Where he lacked good judgment and discretion in his younger years he found in later years. Concerning his loss of composure when he humbled himself to the beauty of a woman he stopped his folly. When we give over to our acts or ideas and God is not in it, it is folly. Folly means one lacks good sense or normal prudence and foresight, criminally or tragically foolish actions or conduct. It is also evil, wickedness, lewd behavior, foolish act or idea, an excessively costly or unprofitable undertaking or an often extravagant picturesque building erected to suit a fanciful taste. This is an absurd and ridiculous, insignificant behavior that causes mankind to hit and miss with God, loving him one minute and forgetting who he is the next. We can be on target one day and off the beacon path the next day. We are hitting and missing the mark set by God for us to reach at a designated time.
A fired up Christian kindles God’s fire setting a dying world on fire for Him by giving spirit to their lives. How do they do this? They inspire them with God’s passion and love for them. This fire drives out the demons that attach themselves to the life of a Christian. An explosion happens when the fire of the Holy Ghost is detonated. Once the Spirit of God has been kindled in the life of a believer, change comes. They begin to operate under the influence of the Holy Ghost, sin angers and irritates them and they are filled with excitement or enthusiasm to do things God’s way.
II Corinthians 5:17 therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold all things are become new. Hitting and missing means the new creature has reverted back to old habits. Time and time again they will get fired up and the tricks of the enemy carry them captive again to a world of sin. Pretty soon like David we get too old to do anything for God that will make an impact where it needs to.
We must love God today, tomorrow and forever, this minute, the next, this moment and the next. Our love must be as the love of God which is immutable and unchangeable always remaining the same. The only change that will come when we stop hitting and missing God is that we will grow to maturity in Christ and this is a real good thing.
When we stop hitting and missing, move out of God’s way then we are on our way to fulfilling the vision of God. How do you arrive to the top of the vision? You go up doing right. If you arrive wrong it will have a wrongful grip on you that when you want to stop compromising the Devil will expose you as a liar, thief and murderer. He will reveal to the world how what you were doing and how you killed someone else’s dream to make yours a reality. God is not impressed with the fine buildings and structures built up in his name when the motives and intents of building were for man’s glory.
In Matthew 4 Jesus was led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the Devil. Too many Christians hitting and missing because they are not being led, they only have zeal. The Devil is offering Christians the world and making them lord over it and they are being deceived by him. Years go by and they are ready to throw in the towel because they only went with a feeling. God needs to come in and disturb our little kingdom and we should not resist the power that has come to sweep away our indiscretions that keep us hitting and missing Him
