Devotionals
It's amazing how we can sabotage ourselves by clinging to the past. Think about it: How many people do you know that are sad because the "good old days" have passed? How many of them are angry and resentful of changes in life?
The nature of life is change. All in all, change works to our benefit. However, there can be times when it doesn't. An illness, changes on the job, or problems with family or friends can cause a great deal of stress and make life difficult. When we face challenges, it's normal to grow sad or angry over the loss of peace that the "good old days" brought. We tend to forget that God uses these times to help us grow. Today's challenge might prepare you for tomorrow's blessings.
I have first hand experience with this. Changes in my work situation resulted in stress that threw me in a two and a half year cycle of despair. I spent a great deal of time angry at other people and at situations that seemed to spin out of control. I found myself in a rut. Over time, my health began to suffer and I noticed strain in my personal relationships. I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired. I couldn't change my situation and it was obvious that things would never go back to the way they were. In the end, I had to face my losses, mourn them, and accept reality.
It was a diffucult lesson, but I believe the Lord used that situation to teach me to trust in Him and not in other people or circumstances. I also learned to stand up for my faith, courage in the face of change, and the true meaning of trusting in the Lord.
We can't choose whether we are a victim, but we can choose whether to remain a victim. Being disappointed or angry is natural, but don't allow yourself to become a prisoner of the past. Trust in God to work all situations out for your good in the end. The ride might be bumpy, but you can rest assured that the destination will bring you right where you're supposed to be - and it will be a good place.
Looking back, I wouldn't trade what I learned from my own dark season for anything. However, I know I don't want to go through those emotional struggles again. I clearly see the benefits of letting go of the past and moving forward in confidence. Things aren't perfect, but I'm rooted in the rock of Christ. I don't doubt the destination any longer.
