Coming at the junction of many paths, he could rest awhile, while he contemplated which to choose. While he ws sitting there upon a mossy rock, another traveller appeared on his right. Happy to see a fellow traveller, he greeted him joyfully.
"Do you mind if I sit down with you?"
"No," replied the other and offered an apple.
"Thank-you," replied the first taking it, "Don't mind if I do," he said biting into it with a loud crunch. "Would you like some juice?"
"Wouldn't mind" replied the first. "I am awfully thirsty and come a far piece."
"From where?" asked the second, wiping the loose dirt off the surface of a log. "Don't mind if I sit down?"
"Not at all, " said the first, "from Hutteldorf. I wish to go to Cobenzl where there is a path westwards."
"Oh, never mind that," said the second, "for Cobenzl is behind me. I left it sometime back. It's foolish for you to retrace my steps." He munched on silently and then remembered his invitation for the juice. Holding out the apple he asked, "Can you hold it a minute?"
"No problem," said the first, taking it.
"Just a second," commented the second, pulling out his bottle. "There's enough to share, but I haven't two cups."
"Never mind," said the first. "Tis something to quench my thirst."
They sat awhile, enjoying the sunlight and twitter of birds, before the first spoke, "You said you just came from Cobenzl?"
"Oh, yes. That was a while back. There's nothing there but tourists, you know. Somebody got married in the chapel today, so it was even worse."
The answer seemed to satisfy the first, but reawakened the second's curiosity.
"Say, didn't you tell me where you were going?"
"No," replied the first, "but if you want to know, it's not a government secret. I am on my way to Klosteneuberg in the vale just west of Cobenzl—"
"Ach, that's not so far yet," exclaimed the other. "We need just to take the path before us and it descends over a steep ridge and there you are."
"Oh really?" exclaimed the first, "So I am nearly there?"
"Not but a couple kilometers away. There's a good alehouse at the edge of the town. Besides I am going there myself."
"You are?" cried the first. "Oh how jolly. The path cannot be long with two to make it short."
And shortly later they set off, sharing the journey between them with good company.
Whithersoever, you go, I shall be with you," said the Lord to Abraham.
