and disappear.
Watch as you go by,
see the reflection there,
and know that all is agony.
The hard pane shines.
Others see only color.
Watch as you go by,
see the haunting pallor,
and know the death of surety.
Fall, raindrop, fall,
and see no more.
Vanish on the sill,
return to vapor,
and hide in sweet obscurity.
Author's commentary:
The symbolism in this poem compares the Christian who is traveling through life without spiritual vision to a raindrop falling past a pane ('pain') of sparkling glass that represents the world. Without seeing through Christ's eyes, the emptiness of the world seems to glitter and shine, whereas it is actually lifeless and hard. The visionless life ends in obscurity. Rain has been used many times in writing to symbolize tears and sorrow.
This poem's mood is one of tears and sorrow over the sin and emptiness of unredeemed mankind and the lack of vision in far too many Christians.
