Topic: Walk (07/20/06)
Walking requires feet. In my youth, my only mission in life was to keep them bare! Shoes and bee strings were the only two things that caused my feet grief.

Now that I am older – I still prefer naked feet - but the health, condition and appearance of them nudge at my gray matter. I can enter the word “foot” in any search engine and I will be slammed with more information than I care for. The advertising campaign for Lamisil® has brought toe fungus awareness to astronomical heights. Just a recent conversation with a drug rep about the new wonder pill made me feel my lack of concern for fungi was equivalent to ignoring the AIDS epidemic. And of course nail salons regularly see my debit card for spa pedicures.

Yes, feet are getting my attention in ways I never dreamed of!

What about God? Would He be as troubled over feet?

Well, He did create feet. He created feet so we could walk. We could walk with Him. We could follow after Him. We could stand beside Him. It is a safe assumption. After all He did say everything He created was “good.”

What about Jesus’ feet?

Jesus, God in the flesh, had feet. His feet learned to walk just as every child must. He teetered along, stumbling, falling and gradually coordinating His balance so He could walk. It is so hard for me to imagine that “God” had to “learn” anything, but He would have. I am so fortunate that some inspired artists have captured intimate moments in Jesus’ early life to canvas to remind me of His humanity.

It is Jesus’ walk on this earth that qualifies Him as the perfect high priest. He has been everywhere. He saw everything. His feet were dusty. He stubbed His toe. He enjoyed the refreshment of splashing in the cooling waters of the Jordan River. His feet, like mine, probably were bare a majority of the time.

He loved feet. He loved them so much He was always freeing them to walk and dance. The lame came to Him in droves to experience the joy of their feet finding their destiny.

His greatest lesson on humility and service was taught in the simple act of washing feet. Feet that followed Him, yet so often misunderstood Him. Feet that were rude and jockeying for position were cleansed by the Creator of the Universe. That thought always gives me pause.

But the greatest walk those feet took was to Calvary. The greatest pain those feet ever felt was when the nails were brutally hammered splicing through the fragile multitude of bones that formed those holy feet.

That day, those feet could no longer walk.

But on the third day…WOW…those feet did something no pair of feet ever did! They walked right out of the tomb! I have no comprehension of how miraculous that day must have been. I can’t begin to relate to Mary Magdalene’s emotions that morning. Her beloved Master dead, now alive. She could walk with Him again!

Then there is that final scene at the Mount of Olives when Jesus ascended back to the Father. I close my eyes and visualize walking with Him, listening to Him and watching Him ascend into the sky! Then standing there longing, searching the horizon just to catch one more glimpse of His feet!

I, like those early disciples, would have been too mesmerized to move. My trance would have been suddenly interrupted by two men dressed. Men who asked, "Why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, Who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven." (Acts 1:10-11 NIV)

That is the promise that I hold on to now. He will return to walk with His people again! And me, being me; always amuse myself with the fact that “the last shall be first theory.” When He left the first time, His feet were the last. When He returns the second time…I believe His feet be first!

However it happens, it will be the most glorious day in all my life. That day my bare feet will walk with His!

Great message in here. i kinda felt like you went on a few different trails so it was kinda hard to follow at first, but you brought it to a wonderful conclusion. You left the reader with food for thought. Great work!.

(oh, and you spelled "bee stings...bee STRINGS.")

It may be difficult to understand this, but as I was reading this piece I chuckled and grinned, but at the same time my eyes were brimming over with emotional tears. Such a masterful piece to bring both laughter and tears at the same time! Wow, great job! Fantastic read...and I loved your Title! "Foot Note".

I too have always loved walking around in my bare feet. "However it happens, it will be the most glorious day in all my life. That day my bare feet will walk with His!" What an awesome thought!

I really, really enjoyed this! I admit, I've never thought so in depth about feet in the life of Jesus, but you made it so interesting and relevant. Beautiful thoughts here. Fantastic!

This was wonderfully creative and inspiring. I found it very easy to follow. I enjoyed it immensely. I did find one sentence that you might need to take a look at: “I believe His feet be first!” Great job.
