Reliability Guaranteed

The bright sunlight that filtered through my bedroom triggered instant panic. I had overslept and Tom had missed the school bus. What a day to have my car hanging out in the repair shop!

With all deliberate speed, I jumped out of bed, my mind a potpourri of options; none of which included time out for divine guidance. While Tom got ready for school, I eliminated every possible alternative that would get him to school on time.

No, that wouldn’t work, too late for that idea The obvious won out; Tom would have to grab a cab. If budgets could talk, mine would have let out a rather vigorous protest as it inched closer and closer to going from black to red. What an expensive price to pay for a few extra Zzz’s

Tom had no problem making himself heard, emphatically.

“Nope, Mom, save your money. I can walk to school, even though I’ll be late.” Before I could counter his emphasis with some of my own, he bolted out the door, and then looked back at me with an impish grin. He knew I would never allow the neighbors a sneak preview of my bedtime attire.

Just as he reached the end of my driveway, a neighbor drove by, stopped, and pulled his car next to Tom. After a few seconds, Tom turned towards the house and threw me a wave.

“Bye, Mom, Pete’s driving me to school.”

A poet’s words filter through my surprise.

His help sufficient, swift His rescuing feet
His promises are matched with equal power; the score
Of all my prayers this motto bears, He can do more!

In an anxious moment I relied on myself, but He who never slumbers nor oversleeps offered reliability that comes with a permanent warranty. Even when I choose my brand of sufficiency, He overlooks my failure, and His brand of dependability endures.

Amidst the day to day events, our hearts become His pulpit. We fail, fall and rise again through the words He speaks into our spirits and the promises He very gently brings to mind. He will not, nor cannot go back on any of the over three thousand promises He’s written to me and you.

Not that we’re sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God (2 Cor. 3:5).

My God shall supply all of your needs… (Phil. 4:19).

We often betray His trust, yet He remains faithful.
