The historical genealogy of America shows that most of its residents have roots from outside its shores. Migrants dream of this country as a habitat of opportunity, second chances and a better future for their children and further generations. The strive to do more and to reach higher where they can be accepted for who they are instead of by who they represent. Over the years, although given sanctuary, some of these LEGAL immigrants were unwanted job market competitors or were ostracized because of being minorities of differing religious beliefs. Integration takes entire lifetimes, yet immigrants and refugees have greatly contributed to the country’s economy. More likely to start new businesses, they have favorable influenced the labor market and enriched the culture in this land of opportunity. They also have brought individualistic flavors to our palates. Conversely, some U.S. citizens feel that immigrants will dilute American values and/or traditions as they meld into this country. This is represented in the newest infiltration of school students that is advocating making other languages official as primary to English-speaking residents. Throughout American history, the debate continues over opening or closing its borders.
Famous actors and actresses (Maureen O’Hara, Michael Caine, Yul Brenner among them), philanthropists like Alex Trebek, inventors (Nikola Tesla), and Nobel Prize Winners such as Albert Einstein and Henry Kissinger have blessed us and added spice to the stew that continues to brew over the hot coals of public tolerance versus negativism during difficult times. Madeleine Albright, the first woman to become the U.S. Secretary of State, was not born in America.
Immigration has long been considered a cornerstone of American culture, but it has more recently become a complex and controversial issue. How can America balance its moral obligations to rescue the persecuted as they flock to its shores—without discrimination against its present citizens, threatening to take away jobs and overrunning its largesse? Would it turn its back on Holocaust tyranny and violence to innocent victims of abuse and Communistic indoctrination? These are present-day questions that have convoluted answers, but one thing is clear: America must limit the yearly incoming aliens or it promises to collapse under all the problems large numbers create.
How boring and unproductive our society would be if it was only comprised of sameness, a bland watered-down version of its present self! God, as the great Creator of this universe, has shown by His variances of sizes, colors, nature, plant and human life ordained by His imagination, that each is designed with perfected abandon, exemplifying that we become stronger and more beautiful and more effective by the mixing of our diversities.
Forced integration in United States’ school systems and work forces have proved to be beneficial; but were opposed, sometimes, violently, at their inceptions by the reigning classes. This country, because of its varied mix of peoples, nationalities and races, forever should remain the freedom-loving nation it was destined to be at its founders’ instigation. It can then continue to be the flavorful hodgepodge stew, thickened in its own broth of liberty and justice and freedom for all within its borders, causing all to develop into the masterpieces God intended them to become.
