I watched my son's first faltering steps
My arms stretched out to catch him up.
He totters, giggles, wobbles, smiles,
And spurns my hands to help him on. ...
Then thump! He's down - not hurt I know,
Yet smiles are gone and howls begun....
He fell... and pride fell too.
I picked him up and held him close,
Mine to console, and love and soothe.
Then kissed away the tears he'd cried
And set him down to try again...
And then I thought - he's just like me;
I tell the Lord I don't need help.
'I won't hold on Your hand, not yet,
Not till I proved I can.'
I totter on my way, until
I fall as well - my pride hurts too...
'I mucked it up. I'm not much good.'
My Lord, more tender than my mother-Iove
Bends to console, and love and soothe.
I've learnt my lesson Lord -I know
I need Your help; Your hand in mine.
My son will grow, he'll soon walk well
Dear Lord, I pray for him and me;
That we may stay Your children still
And keep our hands in Yours.
