Phoebe set her cup of goat’s milk down and leaned in closer.
Hannah took a deep breath then began, “When Judith’s husband, Peter, first began following Jesus I was a little skeptical. Jesus didn’t seem to be following the pattern of what I had expected in the Messiah. But as crowds began coming to our home to hear him, and to be healed, I took every opportunity to learn more about him. One day I will never forget. It was sabbath and I woke up with a high fever. I was so sick I didn’t think I would live. I knew Jesus was coming for lunch after synagogue, but I didn’t have the strength to sit up, let alone get up and try to serve a meal.”
“Oh, my!” An expression of concern furrowed Phoebe’s brow.
“Judith was so worried she stayed home with me. I kept drifting in and out of sleep, but I heard her go out the door about the time Peter and Jesus should be coming to the house. The next thing I remember is feeling the radiance of His presence fill the room. Jesus took hold of my hand and with great authority He rebuked the fever. My eyes fluttered open and I can’t describe the tenderness and compassion I saw in His eyes. Immediately I felt strength and energy flow through my body.”
“That gives me chills,” Phoebe exclaimed.
“Me, too,” countered Hannah. She continued, “I immediately got up, bathed, and began serving the crowd that was beginning to gather. I had not felt so energized in all my life! The house was packed that night with people needing healing or demons cast out. Jesus healed them all!”
Hannah reached across the table and grasped her friend’s hand. “Let me share something else. Jesus not only heals and casts out evil spirits. He also forgives sins.”
“Really?” Phoebe’s eyes widened.
“I have heard Him myself. When questioned by the Pharisees and teachers of the law, Jesus answered them, ‘Which is easier to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Get up and walk? I want you to know the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...’” Luke 5:23, 24 NIV
Hannah continued, “I think Jesus fulfills what David wrote in Psalm 103:3, he ‘forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases’. Physical healing is something to be desired, but to be truly whole we need something more. We need forgiveness of sin— the ultimate healing. And Jesus does it all!”
Looking into Hannah’s eyes, Phoebe declared, “You are convincing me that Jesus is truly the Messiah we have been looking for.”
*NIV The account of the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law is found in Matthew 8:14-17, Mark 1:29-34, and Luke 4:38-41. Added details are from the author’s imagination
