TITLE: I've Got the Time | Previous Challenge Entry

I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. The house was quiet at last. I needed time to talk to the Lord without anyone around. This was a private matter. I didn’t want anyone to know yet, not even Peter.
I sipped my coffee deep in thought. Peter and I had seen the recent film on prayer. Our small group used it as a study. My heart had been stirred, but now it was time for action.
I chuckled as I remembered the tribe of Reuben when Deborah was a judge.
Apparently, they had “much searching of heart” (Judges 5:15,16), but they stayed at the campfire watching the sheep, and never went to battle. I mused.
“Lord, I don’t want to play games with you. I love you with all my heart. I want to spend time with you. But how?”
My coffee was tepid by now. I put it in the microwave for one minute.
“I’m not complaining, but you know our home doesn’t have a walk-in closet.”
I laughed till the tears came, when I thought about the struggle Peter and I had with all our clothes squashed together in the closet in our “master” bedroom. The three boys shared a bedroom in our two-bedroom home, and we had one bathroom. Some mornings it sure got hectic. I teased Peter that it was a good thing we didn’t have any girls!
“Lord, help me to put you first, and be a blessing to my family.”
The next morning I got up at 5 am before the family stirred. Soon Peter wandered in and found me asleep in the recliner.
“Are you okay? Why are you sleeping in the recliner?”
“I was having some private time, and I guess I fell back to sleep.”
Well, so much for using the recliner as a ‘prayer chair’. That didn’t work.
I went into the kitchen with my coffee. The nearly full cup was stone cold. I dumped it in the sink and poured a fresh cup.
I’ll have to think this through. There must be a workable plan!
I made sandwiches for the boys’ lunches. I cringed as I put out the “Captain Crunch”, “Cocoa Puffs” and “Frosted Flakes”. Peter was just a big kid and loved his “Frosted Flakes”.
<>“Gross! I don’t know how they can eat this stuff. I’ll take my ‘Raisin Bran’ any day of the week.”
I put milk and orange juice on the table. Soon the aroma of toast filled the air. Then the room filled with laughter and the hustle and bustle of getting another day started.
I watched them take off, shook my head, and smiled. How I loved my family.
Once again, I sat at the kitchen table with my coffee. The house was quiet, and it was just the Lord and me. I read Philippians 4:6,7, and my heart was stirred afresh.
“But how?” I asked, “Show me a way.”
“Five am will work”, came the thought., “Switch to a kitchen chair and you might not fall asleep so quick.”
So, the next morning I crept out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. With a fresh cup of coffee I sat at the table in a straight-back wooden chair, my Bible and notebook in hand. So far, so good – I didn’t fall asleep.
Gradually the family stirred as I heard one, then another head to the bathroom. By 6 am the air was filled with the aroma of toast, and laughter filled the room as the family started their day.
The rest of my day was a blur. But I had found the key. You make time for what you really want to do. First things first and everything else falls into place.
“Thank you, Lord,” I rejoiced, “I’ve got the time.”
