“I declared the drought three years ago, God sent me to the Brook Cherith where I was to wait. I waited until the brook dried up. I had nothing, but God took care of me. It was a shock at first, but God had unclean birds bring my meals. That took some getting used to, but I did get used to it. I was actually happy there and would have stayed as long as it took; then the brook dried up and I got new marching orders. The word of the Lord came and told me to go to Zarephath, because a widow there would provide for me. It seems strange for a widow to provide for my needs. Perhaps she had a wealthy husband, I hope so.”
As Elijah reached the gates of Zarephath he saw a woman whose beauty had faded , because of the cares of life, gathering sticks and he heard the voice of God again. “Ask her for some water.”
“Lord, You can’t have meant this woman? She can barely provide for herself, she surely can’t take care of me too.”
“Ask her.”
When God tells you to do something you do it so Elijah said, “Pardon me, could you please bring me a little water?” As she was going to get some he added, “And, a morsel of bread.”
‘I’m sorry, I don’t have any bread I was just gathering a few sticks to cook the last of our flower and oil into a little loaf of bread for my son and I. When we eat it there is nothing left the two of us will starve.”
Elijah told to her, “Don’t worry, go cook like you planned, but make me a small cake first, then make some for yourself and your son. For the Lord told me your flour will not run out or the oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.” (1 Kings 17:14 NIV)
She went away and did as she was told figuring her last meal could just be her yesterday’s meal, at least her son would eat. When she fixed the little cake for the prophet there still seemed to be enough to fix the meal she had planed for herself and her family. The next day there was enough for three, and the next day, and on an on for many days. The widow could be a perfect hostess when she was getting a daily miracle.
