As I moved toward the kitchen, this nagging feeling kept after me. I called out to my wife and said, “I don’t know what this means. I keep getting this ‘message’ that I should take food from the freezer over to Glenn.”
My wife looked at me and shrugged – “Is it a spiritual thing?”
“Gosh, I don’t know. It doesn’t make much sense; with Glenn’s job, he makes more than the two of us combined.”
As I moved to the den and picked up the novel I was reading, the nudging relented. I halfway listened to the radio as my wife cooked dinner. As if on cue, “We Are the Body” by Casting Crowns began to play. My wife turned to see if I heard the song playing.
“Yes, I hear it,” was all I said.
Closing the book, I got up from my brown recliner and walked to the garage. Pulling down a box, I opened it and taped the bottom closed. As I emerged from the garage, my wife shot me a knowing glance. “You know, it’s just a matter of listening to the Spirit. If it is a spiritual prompting, you need to do it – not ask questions,” she said.
“You’re right, I don’t know why – but I need to do this.” I opened the freezer. We had just stocked up with a side of beef, not to mention all of the frozen vegetables and snacks that I had picked up on sale. I moved the boxes of cupcakes and turnovers to the table and reached for the wrapped packages of beef. I placed ten one-pound packages of hamburger, four roasts and several different kinds of steaks in the box. I took packs of hot dogs, buns and some vegetables from the other side of the freezer.
As I dropped everything into the box, I looked at my wife again and just shook my head. “I just don’t know why I have this feeling.”
“The fact is that you don’t need to know why,” she replied while draining the corn. “Everything here will keep until you get back. You need to get it delivered.”
I put the box into my truck and headed to Carrollton – a little town in the northern suburbs of Dallas. All the way to Glenn’s house, I prayed. Was I really hearing the Spirit? It had never happened before, at least, not like this. Driving on the freeway I resigned myself to doing what I felt God was asking me to do.
As I walked up the sidewalk to Glenn’s porch, I felt apprehensive. What if he was offended? Who was I to give them charity? After all, men are supposed to be the providers for their families. He might take it the wrong way and our new friendship might never become as solid as I hoped.
I knocked and Glenn opened the door.
“Hello, Joe.”
“Hello, Glenn. Look, I don’t know what this is all about, but the Lord has laid it on my heart to bring this food to you. All I can think is that if you don’t need it, you must know someone who does.”
As I reached toward him with the box, I saw his eyes brim with tears. “I was laid off last night. I didn’t know what we were going to do. Thank you so much. We can definitely use this.”
We prayed together before I left.
On the way home, I was in awe that God used me in such a way.
Listen to the nudge – it just might be the Spirit leading you to touch someone’s life.
