“But what about me?” demanded her twin, Inspir. “There’s no real substance or purpose in his stories apart from my stepping in to enlighten his eyes and stir his heart. There is a higher claim on his mind than mere wispy, floating thoughts. I am Mr. Write’s greatest strength, and I must be the primary worker here,” she finished proudly.
“Well, my job is certainly not so romantic or whimsical as either of yours,” grumped their brother, Punctu. “ I have all these rules and guidelines, practically no freedom at all. But I can tell you this: even the best composition cannot stand alone without me. I must separate, accentuate, and alliterate. I must stop sentences, start new ones, ask questions, and make strong emphasis for excitement. Mr. Write must always have me,” Punctu crowed.
“None of you are as important as you think,” interrupted Dedic, who was the more mature sister in the Ation clan. “Mr. Write could veer off-course very quickly with any of you. Now, I am the one who keeps him focused and centered,” she confidently folded her arms. “ Without me, he would be distracted, wandering about, and forgetting the main plan. It is I who give him priorities and make him stick with them.”
“Whoa, all of you,” Continu, the oldest, began to speak in his know-it-all tone. “ There is more, and I am here to carry out the overall and final plan. It is I who teach and help Mr. Write to persevere, to just press on, when all of you have let him down. However discouraged he gets when ideas won’t come, or there seems to be no purpose behind his writing, I will still be here. When the practical tools become tiresome and difficult, and when he is ready to give it all up, I will lift him and carry him forward, slowly but surely.”
Combin, their aging grandfather, was standing nearby. He heard the clamoring and saw that Mr. Write was becoming frustrated and pulled in many directions. He thought of how he might help.
Taking up a strong rope, he placed it first in Continu’s hand, then carried it along for Dedic to grab hold, next Punctu, Inspir, and finally, Imagin. Very deliberately, Combin handed the ends to Mr. Write, and they formed a circle, drawing close together. There was strength in the union, because after all, their last name was the same. They were family.
It was a defining moment. Combin Ation was very wise, and Mr. Write took it all to heart. He would draw upon the uniqueness of each helper as needed, and his words would build and flow, becoming better and better.
